Appalachian Memory Keepers is passionately committed to preserving and sharing the heritage and culture of Appalachia.
Who We Are
We are a group of volunteers who have formed a non-profit organization dedicated to perpetuating Appalachian history, culture, and stories. The sad reality is that while there is continuing interest in this region, the people who lived its history firsthand are passing on a daily basis, and many of their stories of Appalachia are being lost without record.
This is a tragedy. We believe that these people—our people—and their stories deserve respect and have value…tremendous value. These stories should be kept alive because although the world is far different today, the information in these stories may be needed again, perhaps sometime soon. Our children and our children’s children need to know from whence they came. They need to be familiar with their authentic Appalachian heritage, not the one that is so frequently stereotyped in pop culture.
Appalachian Memory Keepers is dedicated to preserving and sharing these stories and memories through modern media, including film, podcasts, photographs, and online articles, so please explore our site and view the great content that we have collected. We encourage you to follow us on Facebook and other social media, and please share our site with your friends and family.
Join us in celebrating the stories of Appalachia, told by and for Appalachians—and for those who recognize the region’s cultural riches. If you have a story to share or know someone to whom we should talk, please tell us HERE. If you would like to join or financially support our organization, please click the appropriate link under the “Support Us” tab. We appreciate EVERY donation because they help us create the films, story series, and other projects that so many of you love. YOUR help makes our work possible!
